Happy Earth Day!!

Happy Earth Day!!

What’s New In the Shop?

Hello, candle and earth lovers!  Happy Earth Day!  I know, I know, every day is Earth Day, but today is the official Earth Day, so here’s a little history lesson for ya …

Did you know that Earth Day was started through the efforts put forth by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin?  Senator Nelson arrived in Washington in 1963, just on the heels of the 1962 release of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.  He was hoping to start a nationwide discussion on the still rather inexperienced conservation movement.

After observing the repercussions of the 1969 California Oil Spill, Senator Nelson increased his commitment to raise awareness to our environment.

Creating the Workshop

Hey everyone!

Did you know that I’ve had some work going on in my shop? I’ve been super psyched to show you all of the changes that have happened in my workshop, but instead of just showing you a random picture of a cement wall bare and then painted, I wanted to show you before and afters.

Soooooo ... Did You Know:

  • My very first 'workshop' was in my upstairs office of my house.  Apparently I was so excited to start making candles that I thought nothing of making them away from any elongated flat surface and opted instead for a wooden desk that had a glass overlay, with a hot plate and boiling water that was melting wax. I realized I was going to run out of room with all of the scents I was making, but not before I realized that I probably wasn’t making them in the safest place either. (Palm, meet face.)

Going In Depth With Dusk

The Happy Lotus: Welcome to the latest scenterview, where we go in depth to find out more of what makes up some of The Happy Lotus' fragrances!  Today we're getting cozy with the scent 'dusk'.  Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Dusk:  Thanks for this opportunity!  I'm a scent that's pleasing to the nose, for sure!  I'm made up of vanilla, amber, sandalwood and musk.

THL: I'm picking up on the vanilla, but it's not overpowering... it's subtle and almost creamy.
Dusk: Well, as always, it depends on the sniffer, but yes, the vanilla is smoothed out with the notes of amber and musk.

THL: I'm curious on your name - dusk doesn't really have a scent, so how did you come to be called dusk?
Dusk: Ooooo excellent question!  Dusk doesn't really illicit a smell as much as it does an image, right?

Scenterview: Coconut Lime Mojito

Scenterview: Coconut Lime Mojito

It's Time to Relax with Coconut Lime Mojito!

The Happy Lotus: Hi!  It's that time again ... another 'scenterview' with one of my candles.  And helllloooo there, coconut lime mojito!
Coconut Lime Mojito: Hey there!

THL: Tell us about yourself - you smell amazing!
CLM: Oh!  Well, thanks!  When it's time to chill out, look no further than me.  I'm made up of coconut, lime, and the slightest hint or orange.

THL: Orange? I can't smell that at all!
CLM: Ya know, to tell you the truth, I can't either, but I can tell ya that the refreshing lime is the perfect companion to the sweet coconut!

Behind the Scents at The Happy Lotus

Did you know the pictures on my website are taken by me? Yep! I've enjoyed photography my whole life, and for a while I actually debated on going to school to become a photographer.

Truth? When I realized nights and weekends would be a requirement for what I wanted to do, (at least temporarily), it was a deal breaker for me.  However, I still continue to educate myself; there's always something new and exciting to learn!

While making candles is a creative process, I also *really* enjoy setting up and taking photos shoots of my candles. I use props around my house, but it's also nice (and a job perk!), to buy a prop that I can reuse as decor.

Scenterview: Awakening

Scenterview: Awakening

It's time to awaken your senses with the latest scenterview, Awakening!

The Happy Lotus: Hello!  Today I'd like to welcome 'awakening' to the interview room!
Awakening:  Hello, everyone!

THL: Wow, I'm picking up on some vanilla right away with you; am I right?
Awakening: Yes, you are!  I'm an elaborate fragrance.  Once you smell the vanilla, the next scents are musk and sandalwood.

THL: Ooooo... *sniffs* ... I feel like there are also some fruity undertones as well?
Awakening: Yes, but here's where I get complicated.  You can find jasmine, lavender, orange, balsam, lemon AND grapefruit oils as well!

Scenterview: One Night Stand

Scenterview: One Night Stand

Welcome to the (top) shelf, One Night Stand!

The Happy Lotus: Well, let me just say, it's quite the honor to interview such an interesting candle.  Tell me about yourself!
One Night Stand: Well, I've got a little bit of masculine and a little bit of feminine to me, making me the perfect fragrance to burn any time of day or night.

THL: I like candles that have both, nice touch.  What scents are you comprised of?
ONS: I do, too!  It's tough to really declare a scent as either masculine or feminine, but I think musk scents are thought of as masculine, while florals are more feminine.  But the truth is in the eye of the beholder, or the "smeller" in this case.  I'm made up of woody and musk base notes, with herbs & amber, then infused with essential oils including sage, lavander, and orange.
